Apache Handlers, running html as php

Apache handlers allow you to control what Apache will do with certain file types. When Apache sees a file, it has an action built in for that file type, and will perform that action.

If you wish Apache to do a different action, you will need to make a handler to tell Apache to perform that action. For example, if you use a file type that requires a special service to run it, such as a file with server side includes that is not named with a .shtml extension, you need to tell Apache to treat these files differently.

To get regular html pages to handle php code, you need to add this line to your htaccess file.
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .html .htm
It is highly recommended that you never allow html pages to automatically handle php or shtml, because this forces all of your html pages to be processed by the server first. Instead, please rename your files to .php or .shtml whenever possible.

Is jnlp supported Mime type in the Host Gator's servers?

HostGator
I think that type should be served as a plain-text/xml page. If so, it will work correctly.

What do you mean by this?
It is highly recommended that you never allow html pages to automatically handle php or shtml, because this forces all of your html pages to be processed by the server first. Instead, please rename your files to .php or .shtml whenever possible.

My website authoring tool is HTML but I want that to function as PHP. What is wrong when the server process the HTML pages? So you think renaming all the pages one at a time is recommended rather than pasting the following?
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .html .htm

HostGator
HTML pages can be sent directly to a visitors browser, with no processing. However, PHP must be processed by the server before it is sent to the visitor, thus using more resources.

If you set that code in your .htaccess, it will work, and it will be more convenient, but it will also greatly increase your resource usage.

Is it possible to set it up that only html files in one directory would handle php?

I am updating a site that would need to handle php only in the index.html in the root directory. The majority of pages are in subdirectories and will have no need to handle php.

I know it would be easier to just rename index.html to index.php, but the client (and as such he is <em>always</em> right) is concerned that changing his homepage to .php would negatively affect his Google rank.

Thanks.

HostGator
Since this is done with .htaccess coding, it can be restricted to a subdirectory, but anything you put in the public_html (primary domain's doc root) will affect all subdirectories.

I suggest changing the primary domain to one of his other domains, so his primary domain can become an addon domain. Then you can put a .htaccess file in the addon folder and it won't affect his other domains.

The only thing concerning me is if I rename my files, the external links coming into my website will break. I'm afraid this will affect my PR rating at Google. Does Hostgator have a way around this?

On my first website, I renamed the files from .html to .shtml. Then I created a new .html redirect file for each .shtml file to try to maintain my links. I'm now getting ready to do this for second website, and I was wondering if there is a better way to do this?

HostGator
The better way is to create mod_rewrite rules in your .htaccess file which force any file names with ".html" to rewrite as ".sthml".

However, that task is advanced and does require some research to get the rewrite rule to work.

Note: You can still use Apache Handler codes to force the server to process html files for SSI, we just don't recommend that because it is resource intensive.
